Driving Back
My brother Tom's car was stolen just before Christmas in 1998. When my father learned of the theft, he offered to find another car, an old Ford that Tom could use until he could replace his stolen one. The Ford belonged to my uncle and Dad offered to drive it back to Edmonton from Kelowna. Just outside the B. C. community of Sicamous, Dad hit a patch of ice just as a semi approached in the other lane. The old Ford slid under the truck's trailer, its rear wheels vaulting up onto the car's hood and into the passenger cabin. And Dad, at the wheel. I don't think that a person - a father can be more dependable than risking and then forfeiting his life for one of his children.
